چکیده

The circumboreal/circumpolar N2-fixing lichen Stereocaulon vesuvianum is among the most widespread and abundant fruticose species in montane Britain but has lost capacity to fix N2 over large areas of country. To investigate whether loss N2-fixation S. linked increased N deposition, we examined thallus morphology, physiology chemistry at twelve locations representing an deposition gradient 3–40 kg ha−1 year−1. Measurements were made parallel on a non-N2-fixing reference (Parmelia saxatilis). presence or absence cephalodia (N2-fixing nodules containing cyanobacterium Stigonema sp) was recorded 500 herbarium specimens dating back 1820. Cephalodium abundance vesuvianum, 15N concentration P. saxatilis, strongly negatively correlated with particularly dry deposited N; do not form total rates ≥8–9 Other morphological oddities N-polluted sites include apothecium (fungal reproductive structure) production green algal biofilm development. Biofilm covered thalli without lacked nitrogenase activity where they rarely develop had activities typical for this species. suggest that present-day N-deposition did exist 19th century largely developed between 1900–1940. Synthesis. We provide clear evidence been regions subjected many decades enhanced atmospheric deposition. This consistent established models diazotrophy, which identify supply combined as inhibitor N2-fixation. Progressive depletion increasing line available data indicating much pollution 15N-depleted. Rates are low compared other symbiotic systems perhaps more likely supplanted by elevated ecosystem compartments fixation (e.g. soils) might also be susceptible merit investigation.

Nitrogen Fixing

Blue Green Algae (BGA) have the capacity to self generate photosynthates from CO and 2 water. It is gratifying to note that Aulosira is the most important alga of the rice fields of India. Algalization has been found to benefit all the growth parameters. The propagation of BGA enriches the N status of soil and also provides organic matter and biological quotient 2 substances for plant growth. T...

Hemoglobin in Frankia, a nitrogen-fixing actinomycete.

Frankia strain CcI3 grown in culture produced a hemoglobin which had optical absorption bands typical of a hemoglobin and a molecular mass of 14.1 kDa. Its equilibrium oxygen binding constant was 274 nM, the oxygen dissociation rate constant was 56 s(-1), and the oxygen association rate constant was 206 microM(-1) s(-1).

Ferredoxins from Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria

Two ferredoxins have been purified from N2-fixing Mycobacterium flavum. Ferredoxin I had a minimum molecular weight (by amino acid analysis) of 11 230 and contained 7.4 mol Fe and 7.0 mol S2per mol. The ratio of the absorbance at 400 nm to that at 275 nm was 0.7. Ferredoxin I1 had a minimum molecular weight of 13478 and contained 3.4 mol Fe and 3.2 mol S2per mol. The ratio of the absorbance at ...

Two microRNAs linked to nodule infection and nitrogen-fixing ability in the legume Lotus japonicus.

Legumes overcome nitrogen shortage by developing root nodules in which symbiotic bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen in exchange for host-derived carbohydrates and mineral nutrients. Nodule development involves the distinct processes of nodule organogenesis, bacterial infection, and the onset of nitrogen fixation. These entail profound, dynamic gene expression changes, notably contributed to by m...

Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria in Eucalyptus globulus Plantations

Eucalypt cultivation is an important economic activity worldwide. In Portugal, Eucalyptus globulus plantations account for one-third of the total forested area. The nutritional requirements of this crop have been well studied, and nitrogen (N) is one of the most important elements required for vegetal growth. N dynamics in soils are influenced by microorganisms, such as diazotrophic bacteria (D...
